Warwick voted for plant-based. We're already making it happen.

In 2023, Warwick students voted for 100% plant-based catering by 2027/28. Whilst the board of trustees didn't ratify our pledges, we've been building on that momentum ever since. Two departments have changed what they serve, five student societies have written it into their constitutions, and we're working with the catering teams on what comes next. Add your name and show the university how many of us want this.

Why this campaign?

The case for going
plant-based at Warwick

What is the problem?

57% of food-related carbon emissions come from animal products. Food is responsible for around a third of all global greenhouse gas emissions, and animal products are most of that. Warwick declared a climate emergency in 2019 and has set itself serious targets on energy and buildings. Food is the next big piece of the puzzle, and it's the piece students are best placed to help move. Thousands of meals get served on this campus every week, and each one is a chance to make that shift a little easier.

What can we do?

Two Warwick departments have already changed what they serve: Sociology serves 100% vegetarian food at every departmental event, while Philosophy agreed in August 2026 to at least half. Five student societies have written plant-based catering into their own constitutions, and the teams who run campus catering have been open and generous with their time. None of this needed new money, a new supplier, or a new building. It needed people asking together. That's what this petition is, and it's the part we need you for.

Is that even possible?

Graz opened the first fully plant-based university canteen in Europe. Students there started in September 2023, gathered over 2,000 signatures, won their Students' Union's backing by that December, and had held more than fifty meetings with decision-makers by the time the opportunity came. Vienna has committed to move its catering to 100% vegan and vegetarian as contracts come up for renewal, starting with a canteen that is now around 70% vegan. At Ghent, a project called Durf Plantaardig got 28 departments and services to commit to plant-based catering in a single year. None of it happened overnight, and all of it started with students asking.

The petition text
To the University of Warwick and Warwick Students' Union
In November 2023, Warwick students voted in an All-Student Vote for the University and the Students' Union to move to 100% plant-based catering by 2027/28. We're asking for that to become a clear, public plan with a date on it, and we'd like to help build it. Plenty has already changed since that vote. Department of Sociology has served 100% vegetarian food at departmental events for years. In August 2026, Department of Philosophy agreed to at least 50% vegetarian at student events. Five student societies have written 100% plant-based catering into their constitutions. Menus across campus have moved, and the people who run catering here have been open to working with students on it. We'd like to build on all of this to make university-wide change. Why it matters: Climate. Food is around a third of global greenhouse gas emissions and animal products are most of it. Warwick declared a climate emergency in 2019 and has set real targets on energy and buildings. Catering is the next significant step, and it's one students can help deliver. Cost. Independent modelling built specifically for university catering finds plant-based meals cost around 30% less and emit around 84% less than meat-based ones, and that a university of our size could save over £500,000 a year. It already works elsewhere. The University of Graz now runs the first fully plant-based university canteen in Europe. The University of Vienna has committed to move its catering to 100% vegan and vegetarian as contracts come up for renewal, with a staff and student working group setting the criteria at the retender. At Ghent University, a joint project between students and the university's Green Office has brought 28 departments and services into plant-based catering commitments in a single year. We understand the honest question that comes back to us, which is whether students really want this. This petition exists to answer it. Every name here is a student or a member of staff at Warwick saying yes. We're asking the University of Warwick and Warwick Students' Union to: Include food and catering in The Way to Sustainable, with a measurable target and a date.Make plant-based the easy choice across SU and Warwick Food Group outlets: plant options listed first, plant milk available on equal terms with no surcharge, and clear carbon labelling on menus.Run a measured plant-based menu trial at the Food Station, the Dirty Duck and Curiositea, and share what the sales data shows either way.Work toward 100% plant-based catering at University and SU events by 2027/28, as students voted.Report the carbon footprint of campus catering each year, building on the work already done at the Dirty Duck. We're not asking anyone to change what they eat at home. We're asking that the more sustainable option becomes the easy, obvious, affordable one on campus. By signing, I'm adding my name to the students and staff at Warwick who want this to happen.
