Why this campaign?

The case for going
plant-based at Angewandte

What is the problem?

57% of food emissions come from animal products

Food systems are responsible for around a third of all global greenhouse gas emissions, and animal products are the dominant driver. Meat and dairy alone generate more emissions than all the world's planes, ships, and cars combined. Every meal Angewandte serves is a choice between perpetuating this crisis or being part of the solution.

What can we do?

Food choices we make today shape our tomorrow

Every plate served in the cafeteria, every catering order and every snack bought reflects a choice made by the university — and the university can choose differently. We constantly talk about sustainability in our classrooms, and as a university, we have the opportunity to put these values into practice in our everyday operations. Going 100% plant-based is one of the most visible, controllable and impactful ways to turn our commitment to sustainability into action.

Is that even possible?

University of Graz went fully plant-based. The University of Vienna hit 70% — Angewandte can be next.

HUFAK commits to supporting only plant-based catering

In June, we achieved something BIG! Our Student Union, HUFAK, passed a motion to financially support only plant-based catering from then on. Their own events are also now 100% plant-based. 🌱💪

Sustainability Fest

We organized the Sustainability Fest — an afternoon filled with talks, workshops, games, a free market, and lots of discussions around sustainability and climate change. And of course, there were plenty of plant-based snacks! 🌱

On May 25th, we cooked some delicious plant-based food for cozy chill-out in the courtyard organized by HUFAK, our Student Union. We gained some visibility, collected more signatures 💪, and, most importantly, established a connection with our Student Union!

Let's turn Angewandte 100% plant-based
Universities historically were and continue to be powerful loci of social change. As art students in particular, we are intensely interested in global challenges, social issues and ethics.  We constantly talk about sustainability in our classrooms, and our university has sustainability goals fixed in its development plan (DE: 5.1. Nachhaltigkeit). However, our university's current practices do not reflect its scientific, ethical and educational principles. Growing scientific consensus continues to emphasize the pressing need for a system-level shift away from animal product consumption and towards plant-based diets. In Europe, food alone is responsible for 30% of total greenhouse gas emissions, with meat and dairy production making up most of that percentage (Petrovic, 2015).Switching to a plant-based diet can help reduce food-related greenhouse gas emissions by up to 70% (Springmann, 2016).Animal-based foods occupy 83% of the world's farmlands but only provide 18% of our calories (Poore & Nemecek, 2018). As for the universities in particular, plant-based meals greatly diminish the environmental impact of university catering. Plant-based meals emit 84% less CO2eq on average compared to meat-based meals, and use less than one-tenth of the land. Moreover, a plant-based transition can be financially beneficial for universities (and students!). Indeed, the transition presents an opportunity for cost savings, with food costs for plant-based meals being on average 30% cheaper than meat-based meals, and 21% cheaper than vegetarian meals (Bryant Research, 2024). We are a student-led initiative working on transitioning die Angewandte to 100% plant-based catering as quickly as possible. This vision of a sustainable and just future can only be realized with your support.

We’re an international movement, so don’t forget the country code!
