Universities research is clear: changing our food policies is key to fight climate change. Here at Plant Based Universities UCLouvain, we believe students have the potential to make real change at universities and beyond. What better place to start the transition than the institutions where environmental research is born?
Food systems are responsible for around a third of all global greenhouse gas emissions, and animal products are the dominant driver. Meat and dairy alone generate more emissions than all the world's planes, ships, and cars combined. Every meal UCLouvain serves is a choice between perpetuating this crisis or being part of the solution.
Every plate is a decision UCLouvain makes and can change. UCLouvain has already committed to reaching carbon neutrality by 2035 and has signed Wallonia's Green Deal for sustainable canteens. Going 100% plant-based is one of the most visible, controllable ways to actually deliver on that promise.
University of Graz went fully plant-based. Edinburgh hit 70%. Antwerp has taken beef off the menu and is aiming for 80% vegetarian and plant-based meals by 2030 — and UCLouvain can be next!
