We turn universities plant-based and need your help. This has a major impact not only in terms of the number of meals provided, but also in terms of the influence it has on graduates who will in turn go on to influence society themselves.
Food systems are responsible for around a third of all global greenhouse gas emissions, and animal products are the dominant driver. Meat and dairy alone generate more emissions than all the world's planes, ships, and cars combined. Every meal Arteveldehogeschool serves is a choice between perpetuating this crisis or being part of the solution.
Arteveldehogeschool itself states that "The Student Services Department encourages students to choose climate-friendly food through nudging, campaigns and targeted information". However, many non-plant-based products are still on offer in the canteens and vending machines.
Every plate is a decision Arteveldehogeschool makes and can change. Arteveldehogeschool has already committed to "encouraging students to choose climate-friendly food through nudging, campaigns and targeted information". Going 100% plant-based is one of the most visible, controllable ways to actually deliver on that promise.
Food is also one of the three key areas identified in Arteveldehogeschool's carbon footprint assessment, alongside mobility and energy. As part of its climate plan, Arteveldehogeschool has committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 47% by 2030, in line with the Belgian target, with the ultimate goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2050.
Moving towards 100% plant-based food would turn these climate commitments into a concrete and visible action, while directly addressing one of the major sources of Arteveldehogeschool's carbon footprint.
University of Graz went fully plant-based. Edinburgh hit 70% — and Arteveldehogeschool can be next! Arteveldehogeschool has already committed to transitioning staff catering to 100% plant-based by 2027. Now we want all the catering to be 100% plant-based too. Get in touch to make this happen and make a massive impact!
