The case for going
plant-based at Lucerne

What is the problem?

57% of food emissions come from animal products which provide less than 20% of global calories.

Food systems are responsible for around a third of all global greenhouse gas emissions, and animal products are the dominant driver. Meat and dairy alone generate more emissions than all the world's planes, ships, and cars combined. Every meal HSLU serves is a choice between perpetuating this crisis or being part of the solution.

What can we do?

Every plate is a decision HSLU makes and can change. The Design, Film, Arts departement of HSLU has already committed to vegetarian catering. Going 100% plant-based is one of the most visible, controllable ways for HSLU to prove their commitment to sustainability.

Is that even possible?

University of Graz went fully plant-based in 2024. Neuchâtel's canteen and the Rämi 59 in Zurich are fully plant-based too — and HSLU can be next!

If we want to have a chance against the impending collapse of the global climate, one of our strongest means is to approach a plant-based food system. Food is an important and emotional part of our life and it can seem daunting to change our habits. Thankfully, healthy and tasty alternatives to animal products are now widely available, affordable and diverse... What if our canteen's offer consisted only of food that is kind to nature and animals — without compromising on taste or nutritional value! We are HSLU students and part of Plant-Based Universities (PBU) , an international organisation working to help universities and colleges all over the world go plant-based. Help the HSLU canteens commit to a 100% plant-based supply!
