plant-based at UvA
What is the problem?
57% of food emissions come from animal products
Food systems are responsible for around a third of all global greenhouse gas emissions, and animal products are the dominant driver. Meat and dairy alone generate more emissions than all the world's planes, ships, and cars combined. Every meal the UvA serves is a choice between perpetuating this crisis or being part of the solution.
What can we do?
Feed the future, not the crisis!
Every plate is a decision the UvA makes and can change. In 2021, the UvA published a white paper, stating to reduce their ecological footprint by 25% in the next 5 years. Going 100% plant-based is one of the most visible, controllable ways to actually deliver on that promise and lead the change toward a more just world.
Is that even possible?
University of Graz (Austria) went fully plant-based. Edinburgh hit 70%. Both of these wins are a result of consistent student advocacy. Your support can ensure the UvA will be next!

We reached 1,000 signatures! Thanks to outreach during the introduction weeks and lots of promotion at the start of the academic year, our petition hit the 1,000-signature milestone! On top of that, we welcomed many new campaigners to our team, giving our movement even more momentum!
The joint efforts of PBU UvA, the ASVA Student Union, and the Antikantine movement, and the UvA Green Office resulted in a major change in the UvA canteen: a launch of a fully plant-based stand run by students!
De Nieuwe Mensa is a 100% plant-based, student-run canteen stall on the UvA's Roeterseiland Campus, committed to feeding the university community sustainably and affordably. Since their launch in February 2025, they've established themselves as a commonplace element of the UvA community, serving ~300 customers per day!
We reached 500 signatures on our petition in less than two months! Reaching this incredible milestone and seeing the student & staff support only gave us more motivation to continue the campaign and demand for the UvA to feed the future, not the crisis.
In February 2024, we launched our campaign with one unequivocal goal: getting the University of Amsterdam to transition to 100% just and sustainable plant-based catering to tackle the climate and nature crisis. We launched a petition and began doing outreach on campus.
